Bird Valley Estate is situated in the Summer rainfall area of the midlands and experiences typical weather patterns of high summer temperatures up to 40c, and late afternoon thunderstorms. In winter the temperature can drop to -4 during the night, with an occasional -6 every 4 or 5 years. Early winter mornings are accompanied by frost on the ground, but this soon melts off and gives way to gloriously warm winter days. The temperature only drops again in the late afternoons. The average rainfall is 1000 mm per year.

Bird Valley Estate falls under the district of Cramond, a siding stop on the railway line from Greytown to Pietermaritzburg. Here you will find a general store, post office, petrol station, police station and a church. The shop is Muslim owned and sells virtually everything, except meat and liquor.
